Saturday December 11 2010 Gran Canary Island: On this bright sunny morning on the northern coast of Gran Canaria, names of the competitors were drawn from three separate swimfins.

One fin held the names of seven former world champions plus current world champ, Amaury Laverne (REU).

In another, four talented international riders’ names rest inside the foot pocket and in the third swimfin, the names of the four invited locals who will represent the Canary Islands.

Every four names called set the stage for essentially a super quarterfinal heat. Each of the 4-quarter final heats will see two world champs, one international rider and one local representative competitor. One by one, names were plucked out the fins and called out by event host and commentator, Manny Vargas. The names cut through the crisp morning air and echoed off the stone walls…

The start of the USBA Sport Chalet US Open of Bodyboarding was kicked off with the National Anthem, sung by Priscilla Eve, a local Los Angeles artist. Competition began with the Men’s Pro Division with riders from all around the globe as well as local competitors. With seven heats lined up in the first round of the Men’s Pro, the athletes set the tempo for not only themselves but for the rest of the divisions of the contest. Heavy hitters such as Jeff Hubbard, Guilherme Tamega, Jacob Romero, and Jason Bitzer were kept on their toes by rising talent such as Alex Brown, Nick Ormerod, Hayata Enkido, and Nicholas Seymour.

Keeping the action going were the Drop Knee Pro riders in their quarterfinals. A full on clinic of how to lay it down DK on a Bodyboard was shown to the masses on the beach! With the lineup of DK riders, you would know that every big name pro came out to this event to try and stake claim of being the best. David Hubbard, Micah McMullin, Bud Miyamoto, Joe Grodzen, Nick Ashby, Chris Taloa, and Jeff Bragg were just a handful of the talent, but all took it to the final horn in each heat.

Finally came time for the beautiful women of our sport to display their talent. The Women’s Pro Round 1 was filled with great waves and excellent riding. The semi finals tomorrow will be filled with stiff competition to look forward too.

The day wound down with excitement from both the Amateur Open and 13-18 yr old divisions. Even with the winds picking up a bit, conditions stayed fairly descent. Standouts were Rocket Klein, Trevor Kam, Marshall Orr, and Shea Sevilla

Sunday will be action packed with the semi-finals and finals lined up with a high level of competition. Everyone who advanced is hungry for making the podium and claiming their title as the USBA Sport Chalet US Open champ!

The decision to postpone R5 of the Arica Chilean Challenge was rewarded yesterday when a big swell rolled into the famed reef and turned it on for the Top 16. The conditions were classic and El Gringo fired up for the crowd in Arica with 10-12 feet waves.

DAY 5 ARICA CHILEAN CHALLENGE 2010 GOES OFF

The top-16 debuted and dominated the heats. 

The highlight of today was the Hawaiian, world champion in 2009, Jeff Hubbard. Accustomed to the great conditions in Hawaii, Jeff showed that it is tough to beat him in big waves and combines 18.67 out of a possible 20 in his opening heat.

Jeff got one of the biggest waves of the day and with a trademark high-flying air got the first perfect ten in whole contest. The heat also featured Australian Dave Winchester, who got two excellent waves and advanced to the next man-on-man round.

Six-time world Guilherme Tamega also showed that he is connected with Chilean waves. The Arica Champion in 2008 showed great knowledge of the wave and pulled out a beautiful 9.00 on his best wave. Guilherme still had time to got a 7.5 to combine 16.50 out of a possible 20 points and go through to Round 6.

Amaury Laverhne was another athlete who has shown consistency in 2010 and started the day with a great performance, also advancing.

In the same heat, Magno Oliveira secured two good waves and also progressed to next round.

Frenchman Pierre Louis Costes, winner of Buzios Bodyboarding 2010, put in a huge performance. With two good waves in the beginning of his heat Pierre gave to the crowd something to cheers about. Hawaiian Mike Stewart had a perfect start to his title defense with two good waves, the 9x times world champion combined 16.50 out of a possible 20 with a win.

Another top-16 that debuted at Arica in this round was Australian Ben Player. In a fierce battle against countryman Ryan Hardy, the 2x world champion moved into first place followed by his fellow countryman. 

A new call is scheduled for this Friday at 08:00 (GMT).

BODYBOARDING MADNESS!!

This morning the conditions were perfect  to continue on with the Arican Chilean Challenge. Yesterday nothing was sure but today the organization decided to start the first heat of the fourth round.  The heat was made up of by Michel Novy from Australia, Eriberto Abrantes from Brazil and the Chileans Kevin Torres and Gastón Rojas.

The Australian achieved a very good performance with an impressive second wave. He scored a  9.33 with an ARS (Air Rollo Spin) which made him win the first round, 6 points ahead of the Chilians. The second heat had  good waves, about 5 feet high seeing two-times world champion Damian King (Australie) eliminated by Jacob Romero from Hawaii and the South African Jared Huston.

Then, it was time for 3 of the best Chilian riders to come on stage : Michel Pascal, Cristian “Popey” Fernández and Alexandre Wittman and one of the favorites of the contest: the Brazilan Luis Villar. This exciting heat was won by the Ariqueño Cristian Fernández who received the cheers of the public for the quality of his performance. In second place Alexandre Witman from Iquique ( Chile) who achieved a very good performance too.

Today, we are done with the eight heat of the fourth round with the participation of Yeray Martínez from The Canary Islands, Jake Stone from Australia, Gestao Entrudo from Portugal, Ardiel Jimenez from The Canary Islands and Sebastián Krefft from Antofagasta (Chile).

The competition goes on tomorrow morning at 7.30AM . The fifth round will decide the winner of Pipeline (first Grand Slam of the year) :  Amaury Lavherne ( Reunion Island-France), Magno Olivera from Brazil, Michel Novy from Australia and Jared Huston from South Africa. During the next few days, the famous “21 de mayo swell” is expected. This swell will assure an exciting final of the Arican Chilean Challenge 2010.

Day two (5/16) was smaller but still plenty contestable, with highlights including Jacob Romero exhibiting solid wave selection and powerful maneuvers to move the Maui superstar on to the next round of competition. Jacob has a sweet blog you should check out at www.jacobromero.com Late a.m. seabreeze crashed the party, but not until Round 2 and and all but 2 heats of Round 3 were completed.

The 3rd day of the event (5/17) showed fading swell, and with a Grande swell on tap for this week, only the last two heats of round 3 were completed and the event put on hold until 7 a.m. Tuesday. Hawaiin David Phillips showed he is a force to be reckoned with, netting the highest score of the day (15 out of 20), flat out ripping and taking first in his heat and advancing to Round 4. Also of note was Aussie Nick Omerod being eliminated with less than a minute left in the heat, being upset by Brazilian Joao Zick who is competing in his first IBA world tour bodyboarding competition.
