The Arica Chilean Challenge goes on…

Arica, CHILE,  Jan. 27, 2010 – In spite of a few hesitations about the conditions yesterday,the competition continued this morning as “El Gringo”  proved its usual consistency.

This morning the conditions were perfect  to continue on with the Arican Chilean Challenge. Yesterday nothing was sure but today the organization decided to start the first heat of the fourth round.  The heat was made up of by Michel Novy from Australia, Eriberto Abrantes from Brazil and the Chileans Kevin Torres and Gastón Rojas.

The Australian achieved a very good performance with an impressive second wave. He scored a  9.33 with an ARS (Air Rollo Spin) which made him win the first round, 6 points ahead of the Chilians. The second heat had  good waves, about 5 feet high seeing two-times world champion Damian King (Australie) eliminated by Jacob Romero from Hawaii and the South African Jared Huston.

Then, it was time for 3 of the best Chilian riders to come on stage : Michel Pascal, Cristian “Popey” Fernández and Alexandre Wittman and one of the favorites of the contest: the Brazilan Luis Villar. This exciting heat was won by the Ariqueño Cristian Fernández who received the cheers of the public for the quality of his performance. In second place Alexandre Witman from Iquique ( Chile) who achieved a very good performance too.

Today, we are done with the eight heat of the fourth round with the participation of Yeray Martínez from The Canary Islands, Jake Stone from Australia, Gestao Entrudo from Portugal, Ardiel Jimenez from The Canary Islands and Sebastián Krefft from Antofagasta (Chile).

The competition goes on tomorrow morning at 7.30AM . The fifth round will decide the winner of Pipeline (first Grand Slam of the year) :  Amaury Lavherne ( Reunion Island-France), Magno Olivera from Brazil, Michel Novy from Australia and Jared Huston from South Africa. During the next few days, the famous “21 de mayo swell” is expected. This swell will assure an exciting final of the Arican Chilean Challenge 2010.
